On Monday, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said that Japan would lift a state of emergency for Tokyo and four remaining areas later that day, but that it could be re-imposed if the pace of infections increased.
On May 14, social distance curbs were loosened for most of the country as new infections dropped, but Tokyo and four other prefectures were kept under watch by the Government.
Abe also told a news conference that the cumulative amount of stimulus from two economic packages would reach 200 trillion yen, but going back to normal life and minimizing the risks of infection would still take considerable time.
