Pooja Hegde is an Indian model and film actress who appears mainly in Telugu and Hindi films. A former beauty pageant contestant, she was crowned as the second runner-up at the Miss Universe India 2010 competition, before going on to make her acting debut in Mysskins Tamil superhero film Mugamoodi.
She competed in the 2009 Miss India competition, but was eliminated in the early round despite winning the 2009 Miss India Talented Award. She re-applied the following year and was second in the 2010 Miss Universe India competition, while also being crowned Miss India South Glamorous Hair 2010 in the subsidiary competition. She made her acting debut in Mysskin's Tamil superhero movie Mugamoodi (2012) in front of Jiiva, playing Shakthi's female lead character, a fun-loving girl who inspires the male to change his outlook on society. She was chosen after Mysskin had seen still photographs of her outstanding performance, and Hegde helped to practice Tamil dialog for the film by writing and memorizing words in English, adding that the resemblance between Tamil and her native language Tulu was also useful. Prior to the movie, the film raised high expectations as a result of the novel concept of the Tamil film superhero, and the film debuted at the box office in August 2012. Nevertheless, the film received mixed to negative reviews from critics, hindering its development, and the film ended up being a surprise commercial failure. Hegde's performance also received mixed reviews with Sify.com reviewers, stating that she was "disappointed," while the Hindu reviewer noted that "she doesn't have much talent to prove." She was nominated for Best Tamil Female Debut Actress at the 2nd South Indian International Movie Awards, but lost to Lakshmi Menon.
Her second film premiere, the Telugu film Oka Laila Kosam (2014), was seen in front of Naga Chaitanya. She was praised for her performance in the film. At the same time, she was nominated for Best Actress at the 62nd Filmfare Awards (South). After a production house and the success of director Vijay Konda's previous venture, she was inspired to work on the project. She taught Telugu lessons to help her portray the leading role of a woman. She is also filming for Mukunda in front of debutant Varun Tej, nephew of actor Chiranjeevi. The romantic-action film, set in the background of a village, will be published at the end of 2014. In her second Telugu film, Hegde inspired many with her memorable performance in Mukunda's Gopikamma album.
In July 2014, Hegde decided to make her Bollywood debut in front of Hrithik Roshan in Ashutosh Gowariker's period film Mohenjo Daro, set against the backdrop of the Indus Valley civilization. She was chosen after Gowariker's wife had seen her in an advertisement and called her to the audition, which she had successfully completed. As a result of her commitment to the film, she revealed that she would take a break from performing in regional Indian movies until her Hindi film was released and refused the opportunity to work in a film directed by Mani Ratnam.
Mohenjo Daro released a major box office flop in 2016. The film was destroyed by the critics.
