Song Lyrics :
Song by The Wallflowers
Lyrics
Sirens ring, the shots ring out
A stranger cries, screams out loud
I had my world strapped against my back
I held my hands, never knew how to act
And the same black line
That was drawn on you
Was drawn on me
And now it's drawn me in
6th Avenue heartache
And below me was a homeless man
I'm singin' songs, I knew complete
On the steps alone, his guitar in hand
It's 50 years, he stood where he stands
And the same black line
That was drawn on you
Was drawn on me
And now it's drawn me in
6th Avenue heartache
And the same black line
That was drawn on you
Was drawn on me
And now it's drawn me in
6th Avenue heartache (heartache)
Now walkin' home on those streets
The river winds move my feet
Subway steam, like silhouettes in dreams
They stood by me (they stood by me)
(They stood by me, oh) just like moonbeams
And the same black line
That was drawn on you
Was drawn on me
And now it's drawn me in (yeah)
6th Avenue heartache (6th Avenue heartache) heartache
And the same black line
That was drawn on you
Was drawn on me
And now it's drawn me in (yeah)
6th Avenue (6th, 6th Avenue heartache) heartache
Look out the window, down upon that street
And gone like a midnight was that man
But I see his six strings laid against that wall
And all his things, they all look so small
I got my fingers crossed on a shooting star
Just like me, just moved on
And the same black line
That was drawn on you
Was drawn on me
And now it's drawn me in
6th Avenue heartache (heartache), heartache
And the same black line
That was drawn on you
Was drawn on me
And now it's drawn me in
6th Avenue heartache (6th Avenue heartache), heartache
And now it's drawn me in
Oh, and the same black line
That was drawn on you
Was drawn on me
And now it's drawn me in
6th Avenue (6th, 6th Avenue heartache) heartache, heartache

"6th Avenue Heartache" is a song by The Wallflowers, an American rock band. It was released in April 1996 as the lead single from their second album, Bringing Down the Horse. The song was their first hit, reaching No. 8 on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart, No. 10 on the US Mainstream Rock Tracks list, and No. 33 on the US Hot 100 Airplay chart. Adam Duritz from Counting Crows provided the background vocals for this tune. Despite being a rock radio hit, the song was eclipsed by its follow-up single, "One Headlight". It was the most popular song on Adult alternative radio stations in the United States in 1996.
Background and writing
The band's lead singer, Jakob Dylan, penned the song at the age of 18 and considers it his first real song. It was supposed to appear on their self-titled debut album, but the record company refused to let it. Dylan's lyrics are based on his personal experiences in New York City, namely the story of a homeless guy who sat outside Dylan's window every day and played the same tunes. The man disappeared one day, but his belongings remained until people began to steal them. Mike Campbell from Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers provided the slide guitar on the song, despite the fact that he recorded it in his own studio and never met the band members.
