Song Lyrics :
Go, tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born
While shepherds kept their watching
O'er silent flocks by night
Behold throughout the heavens
There shone a Holy light
Go, tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born
The shepherds feared and trembled
When, lo! Above the Earth
Rang out the angel chorus
That hailed our Savior's birth
Go, tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born
Down in a lowly manger
Our humble Christ was born
And brought us all salvation
That blessed Christmas morn
Go, tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born
That Jesus Christ is born
"Go Tell It on the Mountain" is an African-American spiritual song that was most likely inherited from oral tradition. It was first published by John Wesley Work Jr., however there is some controversy about whether he was the first to write it. Many gospel and secular musicians have sung and recorded this spiritual, which is considered a Christmas carol because its original lyrics celebrate the Nativity of Jesus:
"Go tell it on the mountain, over the hills, and everywhere," referring to the birth of Jesus Christ.
An variant last line omits the mention of Christ's birth, instead announcing that "Jesus Christ is Lord".[2]
Because of the song's oral legacy, "Go Tell It on the Mountain" has also been used as an Easter song, with the refrain varying from:
Go, tell it on the mountain!
Over the hills and everywhere; Go tell it on the mountain.
That Jesus lives again.
